Paranoia

Filed under: random — moiraeknittoo @ 1:32 PM

Maybe I’m a paranoid old fart, but w/out a clearly outlined privacy policy for the “meme” research thing going ’round the knitblogosphere, I’m not participating. I mean, it’s a great market research exercise, should some big ass yarn company come along and ask for the results. Granted, I know nothing about the ethical guidelines of academic research, and have no real idea of how this information will be used, aside from presenting the topic at that panel. I’m very likely overreacting.

But seriously – why would I volunteer that info w/out knowing what the ultimate, end use of the information is to be? I get enough crap from Lion Brand in my mailbox, you know?

I guess it all depends on the purpose of your blog. Me? Not so much with the traffic – this is most a space to brain dump, and to occasionally post some knitter/spinner eye candy. And rant. Don’t forget the rants. :D

Torment

Filed under: knitting, spinning — moiraeknittoo @ 10:57 AM

I’ve revised my version of, well, not really hell, but definitely something that is full of angst and torment.

It’s working from home, on my couch, with my lap covered by a fleece blanket, staring at my sadly neglected spinning wheel across the way, and having most of the yarn in the house within eyeball range. There’s the very lightly washed Romney still hanging out over there by the windows on the drying racks, as I never did get around to putting it away, and the scarf I am working on is staring at me from the other end of the couch.

I never thought it would be a blessing to have to drive out to Redmond every day for work, but I’m beginning to wonder. Campus was closed today (the words “ice rink” were used in an email), and while I don’t have access to everything I need, I can get most things done.

But dude! So hard! Must. Resist. Temptation! *is tormented*

“Nut loaf” just doesn’t have the same leftover feeling

Filed under: personal, random, spinning-fleece — moiraeknittoo @ 1:21 PM

Occasionally, I have more charitable feelings for my family than may otherwise come across on my blogs. We honestly do best when we stay far, far away from one another, but now and again someone gets the bright idea to try to come together in perfect harmony (probably a coca-cola overload), and we do a holiday together.

Some day, I’m going to bring magnets with me and show them all what happens when you try to force two of them together. *blows raspberry*

Anyway, Thanksgiving Day was spent with my sister for a few hours. She’s vegan, and very health conscious, and makes Paris Hilton look fat. So when she suggested we try a local vegan restaurant that was doing take-away (I wonder how many people think I’m a non-US writer by using that phrase?) for the holiday.

Did I mention this is also a raw foods restaurant? From what I gather, the “raw foods” phenomenon is based on not heating anything about something like 165 degrees.

Yeah, you can see where this is going.

Some of it was very good, though. I did like the main course (some kind of nut loaf…thing), though the “gravy” that came with it was awful. The brussel sprouts were, you guess it, raw! Though the vinagrette they were tossed in was pretty good, and the apple-raisin-something chutney served with it was tasty as well. The mixed greens salad with pine nuts and something else had a lovely dressing, and I really enjoyed the parsnip something or other that was the “mashed potato” equivalent. There was an apple crisp for dessert, which was way too heavy on the cinnamon, but otherwise ok.

However, it was also $35 per person. We split the meal, and there really wasn’t enough food there. I would’ve been pissed if I’d spent $70 on this, as Sister Mine was disappointed in the experience. She says their sammitches for lunch are about the same size as pretty much everything on our plates, only for $7.95 and they’re way tastier.

I never thought I’d miss the leftovers, but you learn something new every holiday season. This time I learned that it is not the Holiday of the Giving Thanks without pumpkin pie. Who knew?

Next time I update, I’ll fill you in on how I got in over my head with a breed swap thing. *sigh* For now, I work.

Hope y’all had a great holiday, or for those who aren’t in the US, a fantastic Thursday! :D

I dropped a stitch

Filed under: knitting, knitting-wip, personal — moiraeknittoo @ 8:28 AM

In the fabric of my life somewhere a month ago, and it hasn’t stopped running.

New job is kicking my ass. I’m barely keeping my head above water, and haven’t had a single day yet where I left the building feeling like a success. I hate Outlook more than ever, scheduling a conference room has reduced me to tears twice, and everyone is looking to me for answers a month into the position, and with about 2% of the knowledge my manager has at his disposal. I can’t remember the last time I was this stressed out. The amount of hair in the shower drain is beginning to get a little alarming.

That said, I would usually try to knit to help relieve the stress when I get home. But I’m so damn tired still that I’ve barely picked up the needles since I finished the Dino Hat. I did knit a few more rows on the shawl, but the stitch count went awry in there somewhere, and I’m too tired to rip it back and try to fix it. The thought of doing so, even though it’s mostly garter stitch, is nearly enough to break me at 275 sts per row. Mistakes will have to stay where they are, and I hope it’ll be loved regardless of it’s random mutant and wayward YOs, and strange K2togs.

I had plans, people, for this holiday season. I was going to do mittens, and perhaps matching or at the very least complimentary hats. I had scarves in mind. I wanted to make a shawl for myself (*still*!). I did buy the Solace pattern, but only the gods know when I’ll be able to sit down and work on it.

In the five minutes it’s taken me to write this post I’ve gotten 10 emails, all of which want something from me. Oy.

Hope anyone who reads this is doing better than I. :)

Hmm. Should I?

Filed under: knitting — moiraeknittoo @ 12:29 PM

I really do want to attend the Madrona Fiber Arts festival in January, but can I afford it? The classes are great prices, considering the duration, but I’d have to take at least Friday off of work, and then there’s the hotel, etc. If I go, I’d want to do the full on experience, even if it’s in my backyard.

Anyone else out there thinking of going? If so, what classes are you considering?

Rrrrrrarrrrr!

Dinohat

Dinohat Kit from Morehouse Farm Merino.

Took about an hour and a half to knit (I was watching Stargate: Atlantis and was distracted), and at least that long to cut out the felt and sew up the spikes. I’m not the best hand sewer, despite years of cross stitching. Then again, trying to sew through what seemed like 1/2″ of felt with a very petite tapestry needle meant for cross stitch may not have been the best plan.

My only bitch about this kit (and the snake scarf kit that I will be starting shortly) was that the skein included was oddly wound. Like some of the loops on the skein had flopped over on the wrong side? Which meant that winding it with a ball winder/swift turned into an exercise in enormous frustration. If the yarn hadn’t been so delicious, and the pattern so damn cute, I might’ve hurled it into the fireplace and struck a match.

The yarn is so soft, so sproingy and bouncy that it was a pleasure to knit with. I’m used to somewhat silkier, worsted and heavier feeling yarns, so this was a treat.

Aside from skein issues, this was wonderful, and a pleasure to make.
