Practical or horrifying?

Filed under: knitting — moiraeknittoo @ 6:59 pm

I have all this really lovely fiber and yarn. I mean, I have a LOT. And I love it all and I daydream about what I would like to make from it.

The reality is, if I don’t get off my ass and make something easy, it’s all going to sit here and rot.

And so, I am going to be practical, and I am going to rip the lovely little scarf I started but didn’t get very far with a truly awesome hand dyed merino/angora/silk blend, and I’m going to make…a simple garter stitch scarf.

Because I need to do something with my hands, but don’t have the energy do to anything else.

Should I hide my head in shame, or rejoice in my totally logical approach to my craft?

  1. Rejoice! Knit. Knit something, anything. Keep it simple. You might be needing to knit for reasons other than having a garment at the end of the process. EmBe

  2. Hey there! I say rejoice! I’m in the same boat.. my hands want something to do but my
brain is too occupied with crap to be able to think much about directions. Isn’t that
why garter stitch was invented? *grin*

  3. I’ve been knitting like this for a couple years now. I need knitting as therapy, knitting as a process. Knitting to soothe my soul. People complain about how boring garter stitch scarves are. I knit them all the time. They keep my unreasonably nervous self from from freaking out when I am on an airplane. So I say do what makes you happy!

  4. I totally LERVE the garter stitch and I re-learn the lesson all the time that if I’m not knitting, I’m unhappy about it. Instead of tackling a new complicated project I just started yet another Truly Tasha shawl, which is garter stitch forever with an edging - but you can put that off for a long time by starting ANOTHER shawl just like it to be edged some day. Garter stitch is such a wonderful fabric and I like to knit it really dense since it stretches, and it looks SO good in variegated or “nearly solid” yarns. Garter on Girlfriend, Garter on!
