I bought one years ago, and it is quite noisy. My maintenance/repair (no repairs ever) guy said that it is a sign of a much used and loved machine....... Getting to your question about how to use it: I was lucky enough to get the original manual with it, BUT....... there is an excellent manual (repro) available by Nancy Johnson-Srebro: Featherweight 221, The perfect Portable. You can probably find it online. Well worth the money!! Don't be afraid to use this little gem. YOU can't break it, why do you think it has been around for so long?? Good luck.
