What’s in a name

Filed under: spinning — moiraeknittoo @ 10:30 PM

Do you name your spinning equipment?

The new wheel is assembled (after forgetting to put the drive band on before screwing the footmen assembly to the actual drive wheel oops), and treadled upon, but I shall wait for tomorrow to actually put it to use. It did come with a significant amount of fiber, and I’m really, really looking forward to learning to use it. I see many hours of YAY! in my future, though it’s likely to be a period of swearing to begin with, given how long it’s been since I actually spun anything. I hope she tells me her name too, but for now she’s keeping it sekrit.

Sister is having irregular contractions and is beginning to dialate EEEE! I may be an aunt again anytime now. Think good thoughts for a swift and easy delivery, yes? My knitting bag is already in the car with a book and an iPod, in case it’s a long haul.

More tomorrow. For now? Sleeeeeep.

*flails!*

Oh! OH! My favoritest Romney & Romney cross dealer shepherdess sent out a reminder today to reserve for 2008 fleeces. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! I forgot to do mine early! It’s not a matter of the good ones being gone, because they’re ALL absolutely incredible, it’s more “did I get a nice mix of straight Romney and one with Columbia and one with Montedale and some natural and some white and….”

Yes. Anyway. They’re probably on the expensive side, but opening a bag with her fleeces in it is like a passport straight to a mountain meadow. The fleeces actually smell *sweet*, and burying your hands in the raw fiber is like touching heaven. I freakin’ adore every single bit of fiber I’ve ever gotten from Melissa, and covet all of the ones I’ve bought liek whoa.

So, for the three of you who read this? Go. Look. And if I find I, once again, can’t spin it all this year? Maybe I share.

Rent a sheep

Filed under: spinning — moiraeknittoo @ 7:52 PM

It should be interesting to see how much my spam stats jump with a subject line like that. Oops?

I sort of like the idea of “adopting” or “renting” a sleep for a period of time. You help pay for their care, you get the fleece afterward. It’s kind of a nifty idea, but I haven’t really heard of very many good programs out there. I’ve heard of a few bad ones, but the good ones? Maybe everyone is keeping it to themselves? Hmm.

I need to find out when Shepherd’s Extravaganza is again this year. I hope to pull out the fleece I got last year which was gorgeous and amazing. I may have to save it for late spring/early summer though, when it’s warm enough to wash outside. The house here is on septic, and I rather like the idea of spinning that Romeldale in light, sunwarmed grease. Which means a soak in sunwarmed water with a tiny touch of soap to loosen the most obvious dirt, and air drying. My fingers practically itch for it already.

In the meantime, I have a little bit of roving (stop laughing! I will have you know that I am a Mistress of Understatement, dammit!) to work on. I need to reacquaint myself with the idea of spinning anyway, so prepped roving sounds like a plan to me.

But maybe I’ll find an Adopt-a-Sheep program that would be worth it. I think that’d be super groovy.

Does it count as participation

In St Distaff Day if I bought a new wheel?

Background: I am a big SciFi geek. I love me some Star Trek and Stargate. I even bought all the MacGyver DVDs so I could extend my enjoyment of Richard Dean Anderson back a few years when he was young, taut and pretty. I also now have two Swiss Army Knives in my possession, but that’s a whole ‘nother issue.

Because my RDA lurv is so strong, I got up at 4:30 AM on a fucking Saturday morning to try to get tickets for Gatecon 2008 in Vancouver. The website launched ticket sales at 5am. There were something like 230 VIP tickets, and they were gone within 90 seconds. I have issues with the navigation on the site, the fact that they allowed people to purchase in blocks of ten for fucks sake, and yes, I am in fact BITTER. I’m even invoking the CAPSLOCK OF EMPAHSIS to tell you how BITTER I am.

Obviously, I wasn’t one of the lucky ticket winners. Included in the ticket price was a photo session with the man himself. I’ve invested a lot of tv crush time on him, and you know, I like Vancouver. Tail end of August, nice hotel, a whole plethora of other geeky people who could debate Goa’uld vs Wraith vs Replicators for hours, with citations of specific eps and character names and all the attendant nerdiness that I really do enjoy reveling in.

However, tickets were also 185 GBP, which = a shit ton of cash in USD these days.

So, the moral of the story? I didn’t get the tickets, but I was so frustrated (and sleep deprived) that I called up Copper Moose and ordered a new wheel to help dry the BITTER tears of my fannish disappointment. It’ll be cheaper in the long run, I think. Price of new wheel vs con ticket, gas and drive time to Vancouver, hotel stay for three nights, meals, slipping and falling in the dealer room and swiping my card on the way down…. It’s probably for the best.

Plus, there’ll be no need for RDA to bust out a restraining order*, so I even save on legal fees! It’s a win all around!

Right?

::crickets chirp::

*Disclaimer: I wouldn’t stalk the man, and in fact in-person celeb meetings make me squirm liek whoa. I’ve been to cons where people go off and stalk the actors while they’re in town, and I’ve asked the car to pull over and found a ride back to my hotel to avoid being part of that behavior. I dig the level of interaction RDA has with his fans, and am ridiculously pleased that he’s dipping his toes back into the great fannish ocean after years and years of avoiding it like the plague (see Simpsons episode 17:17 “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bangalore”). I hope everyone treats him with the respect and courtesy anyone should give someone who’s as skittish about his privacy as a wild mustang who just unexpectedly stumbled into a wolf pack. I look forward to the con reports (BITTER! SO BITTER!), but the second level tickets are still way too expensive for me to justify the whole shebang. Anyway, wouldn’t stalk him, respect him lots, hope he enjoys and makes arrangements for smaller cons/events in the future.

This post has no title

Is there anything funnier than a foal who’s just discovering what his legs can do? Is it a universal thing with all baaaaaaaaby animals that they discover the things they stand on can go BOUNCE and BACK and UP? The colt is bouncing around his mother like he has pogo sticks for legs, and it’s hysterically funny. He’s also not liking the halter much, and rubbed his little head against my arm and gave me the sweetest eyelash fluttering look. I told him I wouldn’t take it off, and he bopped me with his nose and wheeled off to go carooming off mom for a bit.

I’m glad I gook the trash out and got to see them out of their paddock. I’ve been hesitant to go into the barn much, mostly because I don’t know what I’m doing out there, I’m not really sure I’m allowed, and I’d be tempted to bring all the animals a big fat treat every single time. Probably not healthy, you know? Getting love blinks from a stallion when giving cheek rubs though…well, that’s a nice warm glo in the old heart right there.

Oh, you want to hear about sheepy things, and not horses that aren’t mine? Well. Not a lot to update there. I had Spinderellas process the merinoX fleece I got from Jean Near into roving. I did ask that they save about 8oz for me to work with hand cards, so I could get used to hand carding again. I can’t find most of my spindles – I have a Jenkins Turkish that I don’t know how to use, and a very light one whose maker I cannot remember…they were in one of the boxes labeled “spinning supplies”. But I haven’t worked with either very much, and I’m really not sure how to use the Turkish. What I really need to do is get off my ass, find a screwdriver, and turn the maidens on the Traveller. It occurred to me, after I took a class at the Spring Fair, that the maidens are all backasswards on the Traveller and have been since I got it. I didn’t know! So I need to find a Phillips head and switch those around, shorten and re-sew the drive band, and maybe then I’ll get out on the lawn and do some spinning.

I’m not really sure I’m a big fan of merino. There, I said it. The feel of it just isn’t comfortable for me right now. I *love* the job Spinderella’s did on the fleece/roving, and I agree that the straight merino is a bit tender and has some neps (features, not bugs), but the silk blend is awesome. I’m glad I paid just a little bit extra to have half of this fleece carded up that way. The roving is awesome, and I want to take the big bag out to my “yard” (it’s looking kind of jungle like right now…I wonder if I should ask the landlady to mow it or just let the mare take care of it) and spin. Maybe Sunday. I can spring for a screwdriver, I found a needle and thread, and I think I found most of the bobbins for the Ashford.

I’m still afraid of the Schacht, which is a shame. It’s so beautiful…I don’t want to mess it up. I know, I know. WTF? But I can’t help it. I want to learn more about spinning before using my superfantastico wheel. It doesn’t make much sense, but it is how I feel.

Unfortunately, ran around Friday afternoon/evening and on Saturday for much of the day. Sunday? I was a total lazy ass and read up on the Potterdamerung and read and read and read lots of intarwebs based fiction. And worked on my Mirabilia in progress. On the other hand, I also got a lot of work done on the teeny cotton beanie for SisSpawn #1, and I finished it this evening. I wish I could a) find the camera and b) hook up my home tower so I can download the pics from the camera to edit and upload. That would be awesome.

Alas, I shall have to settle for a dinner of string cheese and Chardonnay (I don’t think I’m really a fan of Chardonnay), and an early night. I’m such a rebel.

Anyone have any plans for Lammas/Lughnasadh? I’m tempted to make candles again, but would have to dig through boxes to find all the stuff.

Last but not least – random picture of cuteness! Sent to me by a friend. Ahhh!

I spent a little bit of time this weekend flicking locks from the RomeldaleX fleece I picked up at the Shepherd’s Extravaganza a few weeks ago. There’s on name on the info sheet, so I am calling this one Fran. I visited the Fran’s Chocolates shop in UVillage a few days ago when I had to pick up some face stuff at Sephora, and the color in the bag looks a lot like their Dark Chocolate salted caramels. Therefore, the fleece shall be known as Fran from here on out.

I was too lazy to roll out the fleece to get a good shot, but here’s a little bunch of unwashed locks I pulled from the bit that’s waiting to be flicked. So crimpy! So delicious! The staples in the main part of the fleece are much more uniform – I snagged a random patch from the side of the fleece when it was rolled out, in order to get a feel for it before starting in on the really good parts.

And here’s a shot of flicked locks, waiting to be spun. I flicked/carded in the grease, as this is fresh and clean enough to spin that way. There’s actually three layers there, separated by the Fran’s Chocolates tissue paper that came in the bag. :D

I can see there are a couple turned around (that’s what you get while trying to watch the eye candy and ridculousness that is the Spice Girls movie), but I am really looking forward to spinning this.

It’s all quality candy, all the time here at Three Fates Fiber. *G* Alas, I must get back to work now, but oh, someday soon I will have time to spin again!

Time flies like an arrow

Fruit flies like a banana.

I ca’nt believe it’s been two weeks since my last confession post. Time is doing strange things. I continue to pack (slowly), look for apartments (badly), and generally freak out (really really well).

Little things like one of my fannish crushes doing something so utterly dorktastic, yet so completely adorable and very much true to his real like geekiness? Just…. <3!

My class was really great. I learned some good tricks about plying, feel better about Navajo or chain plying, and um. I tripped and fell on a gorgeous dark dark brown Romeldale fleece and oops swiped my credit card on the way down. And six or so ounces of lovely wool roving in colors that made me think of spring and fall. Perhaps a little odd to be thinking about here on the eve of Beltane and the start of summer, but they pleased me at the time.

I think I’m going to spin a goodly portion of the Romeldale in the grease, but before I do that, I wanted to practice a bit. I actually hand carded some RomneyX and spun my own little…what do you call it when you roll it off the cards from side to side rather than from the handle out to the edge? Sausages? Perogis? What? That’s been good, if slow going. I’m enjoying the carding quite a bit. I just rinsed this fleece, rather than washing it completely, so it’s kind of “light grease”. I’m enjoying myself thus far.

I shouldn’t be spinning at all, given how much there is to do before I move. But it’s keeping me sane.

Blessed Beltane to all of you! Oh! And for the BPAL inclined, they’ve got Blue Moon up again! Woo!!!
